José Guilherme's Legacy

José Guilherme, a prominent civil contractor, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 78. He gained notoriety for donating €14 million to Ricardo Salgado, the former president of Banco Espírito Santo (BES). This significant financial gesture was reportedly a thank you for the opportunities Salgado provided, which allowed Guilherme to thrive in Angola.

The BES Investigation

The transfers to Salgado became a pivotal element in the BES scandal investigation, revealing a series of transactions from BES Angola to Salgado’s account in Switzerland. Salgado described these funds as “a generosity” from his friend, reflecting the personal relationship they shared. He claimed the donation was in appreciation for Guilherme's investments in real estate in Angola, advised against investments in Eastern Europe.

A Mysterious Figure

Known as “Zé Grande,” Guilherme maintained a low profile and often avoided public appearances. He notably missed the 2015 inquiry into BES's downfall, citing illness, though he was later seen at a barber shop in Amadora, leading to public outrage. Despite a parliamentary complaint, no action was taken against him.

Connections Beyond Banking

Guilherme’s connections extended beyond banking; he once treated Oeiras mayor Isaltino Morais to a €3,400 lunch for his birthday. He also provided office space to former minister José Sócrates for a business venture.

Benfica's Tribute

Benfica expressed condolences, recognizing Guilherme as a key figure in the construction of the new Estádio da Luz and for his role in the club's financial recovery. Guilherme was a dedicated supporter, holding membership number 3,683.

Financial Troubles

In his written responses to the 2015 inquiry, he lamented losing €25 million in BES shares and bonds and acknowledged difficulties in servicing a €100 million debt. Following the classification of his debt as problematic by Novo Banco, he initiated a lawsuit when attempts to renegotiate payment terms failed. He insisted that he regarded BES and GES as true business partners, reflecting the depth of their relationship.
