Lisbon Takes Center Stage in Global Cinema
Lisbon is undeniably in vogue. Beyond being a favorite destination for millions of tourists worldwide, the Portuguese capital is now hosting some of the planet's most exclusive international events. One such event is the Tribeca Film Festival, which kicked off today and will run throughout the weekend at the Beato Innovation District.
Founded two decades ago in New York City by actor Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal, the festival was established to highlight cinematic culture in southern Manhattan. From its humble beginnings, the festival has grown into one of the most recognized events in the film industry.
Robert De Niro, the legendary 81-year-old actor who draws millions to theaters, is naturally in Portugal to participate in the event. During the festival's presentation, he emphasized the significance of choosing Lisbon as the venue for Tribeca: "Every year, our goal is to unite communities, spark creativity, and inspire new waves of innovation. It means a lot for us to bring this spirit to Lisbon – a city bubbling with renewed cultural and economic promise."
The Tribeca Festival is the result of a partnership between Tribeca Enterprises, the television station SIC, the streaming platform OPTO, and the Lisbon City Council.
This weekend, the festival will feature prominent names from both the national and international film and entertainment scene, offering a program filled with films, discussions, and musical performances.
Among the over 100 guests and participants are festival founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro, along with actors Chazz Palminteri, Albano Jerónimo, Daniela Ruah, Griffin Dune, Whoopi Goldberg, Afonso Pimentel, Alba Baptista, Joaquim de Almeida, comedian Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Portuguese producer Joana Vicente, Prime Video content director for Portugal and Spain Ricardo Carbonero, model Sara Sampaio, musician Dino d’Santiago, singer Gisela João, and writers Mia Couto and José Eduardo Agualusa.
The festival space is divided into four stages. At Tribeca Talks, festival founders and major national and international names will discuss topics such as how to create a "great story", the role of comedy and drama in mental health, the impact of artificial intelligence in film production, and the empowerment of women.
Film lovers can look forward to exclusive premieres. The World Stories segment will showcase “Anora” by Sean Baker, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and “In the Summers” by Lacorazza Samudio, awarded at the Sundance Film Festival. There will also be a focus on national productions at the Made in Portugal stage, featuring a lineup of 12 national films. In a more informal discussion space, Untold Stories, the impact of digital on the industry, community power, actor careers, and the journey of Portuguese talent to Hollywood will be explored.
