Lisbon Wine Region Sales Surge: White Wines & 'Leve Lisboa' Drive Growth

The Lisbon Demarcated Wine Region saw a remarkable 4% increase in sales during the first half of 2024, driven by the popularity of white wines, rosés, and the 'Leve Lisboa' label, according to updated data released on July 9th.

'Leve Lisboa' wines, known for their lower alcohol content, saw a staggering 70% growth compared to the same period in 2023, with 66 million bottles sold between January and July 9th.

Francisco Toscano Rico, President of the Regional Wine Commission, highlighted the region's impressive growth trajectory. He stated, "Over the past six years, the region has more than doubled its sales - a remarkable achievement. This success is a result of the region's strong commitment to the international market."

Exports account for a significant 80% of the region's sales, with major markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Poland, and Scandinavian countries. These exports generated €110 million in revenue.

Lisbon wines currently account for one in three bottles exported from Portugal, representing 20% of national exports. The region is exporting over 100 bottles per minute in 2024.

Despite the global challenges of economic and geopolitical instability, inflation, and high stock levels, the Lisbon wine region is showing signs of resilience. The commission remains optimistic about the future and is implementing strategies to further promote the region's wines.

These strategies include increased marketing efforts in key international markets, including Brazil and the UK. A significant investment of over €1 million is being dedicated to international and domestic marketing campaigns.

The future looks bright for the Lisbon wine region as it continues to grow and expand its presence in the global market.
