Overview

The abandoned building that caught fire on Sunday in the Escadinhas de São Cristóvão area of Lisbon is set to be demolished, as announced by the Lisbon City Council. This action is part of an urgent intervention following the incident.

Immediate Actions Taken

In the wake of the fire, the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (CML) has taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents and pedestrians, including the demolition of the building. The fire occurred in an abandoned property that was part of a group of three residential buildings.

Demolition Plans

To facilitate the demolition, a large crane and construction site will be established at Largo de São Cristóvão, directly in front of the church. As a result, all traffic will be halted in the area, converting the section between Largo de São Cristóvão and Rua do Marquês de Ponte do Lima into a one-way street temporarily, allowing only local traffic.

Fire Incident Details

The fire broke out late Sunday night at number 16 Escadinhas de São Cristóvão and was contained within the building, which was already sealed off and abandoned. Fortunately, it did not spread to adjacent properties, nor did it cause any injuries or displacements.

Structural Concerns

Following the incident, municipal officials indicated that immediate intervention was necessary due to the risk of collapse of the remaining structure. Concerns were raised about scaffolding near the entrance of the Escadinhas, which also posed a collapse risk.

Community Response

Miguel Coelho, the President of the Santa Maria Maior Parish, noted that the abandoned building had been frequented by drug users despite being fenced off. He had previously alerted the municipality about this issue and expressed disappointment over the slow response to address it. The fire began on Sunday night and was brought under control by 2:22 AM on Monday, resulting in minor damage to two neighboring buildings. The Judiciary Police is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
