Summary:

  • Madeira Airport turned into a makeshift dormitory for stranded passengers.

  • High winds led to 28 flight cancellations and diversions.

  • Passengers report lack of support from airlines, with many sleeping on the floor.

  • TAP to use larger aircraft to assist in transporting stranded travelers.

Chaos at Madeira Airport

The Madeira Airport has transformed into a makeshift dormitory, as passengers find themselves stranded due to flight cancellations caused by high winds. According to eyewitness accounts, the situation is described as "out of control", with one passenger highlighting that Ryanair is only managing flights for August 29/30, leaving many travelers feeling abandoned.

Stranded Passengers

Hundreds of passengers are left without accommodations or assistance from the airlines, resulting in mattresses scattered everywhere and some even sleeping on the floor. The airport experienced one of its worst days this year, recording over 28 flight cancellations and diversions. While the airport remained open for landings and takeoffs, only a handful of flights managed to land throughout the day.

Last Flights and Future Cancellations

The last flight of the day landed at 9:35 PM, a TAP flight from Lisbon, with hopes for one final flight from Binter expected shortly before 10:00 PM. However, at least two flights have already been canceled for the following day, and many passengers are anxious about their chances of getting on the next available flights amidst the continuing strong winds.

Airline Response

In a bid to assist, TAP has announced that it will deploy larger aircraft, including the A330, to help transport all stranded passengers.

As the chaos unfolds, the hope remains that the situation will improve for those desperate to leave Madeira.
