Earthquake Hits Southern Portugal

An earthquake struck several cities in southern Portugal early this morning, registering a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale. The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported that the epicenter was located approximately 60 km west of Sines. The tremor was felt across the country from north to south at 5:11 AM, with notable intensity in the Lisbon metropolitan area.

Impact and Response

According to the available information, the earthquake was significant, and the IPMA stated that they would soon issue a new statement with updated instrumental and macroseismic information. They also mentioned that if necessary, further updates would be provided. The tremor reportedly affected regions in Morocco and Spain as well.

Despite the strong tremors felt in the greater Lisbon area, local emergency services reported having “nothing to register yet, nor many calls” regarding the incident. As of 5:30 AM, fire departments in the Greater Lisbon area also indicated that there was no high influx of emergency calls related to the earthquake.
