Current Status of the Madeira Wildfire

The wildfire that erupted 10 days ago in Madeira is finally showing signs of control. Despite some remaining hotspots, the president of the regional civil protection service, António Nunes, reports that the dense fog and 100% humidity today are aiding efforts to manage the situation. Authorities are optimistic that the fire may be declared extinguished by the end of the day.

Ongoing Operations

Night teams are being replaced, and a helicopter is surveying the area for any remaining hotspots. Special attention is being given to areas with potential for reignition, particularly in Ponta do Sol.

Support from Air

Spanish Canadair planes are still actively assisting in the firefighting efforts, having been deployed for the third consecutive day. They are expected to remain in the region for up to five days, with decisions on their return still pending. The civil protection service suggests they could return as early as Monday or Tuesday.

Impact of the Fire

According to the latest report from the European Forest Fire Information System (Copernicus), the wildfire has scorched an area of 5,045 hectares. The fire started on August 14 in the Ribeira Brava mountains and has spread to several municipalities, including Câmara de Lobos and Ponta do Sol.

Challenges Faced

Firefighting efforts have been complicated by high winds and elevated temperatures; however, thankfully, there have been no reports of damage to homes or critical infrastructure. Some firefighters have required assistance due to exhaustion or minor injuries, but there are no serious casualties.

Investigation Underway

The Judiciary Police is currently investigating the cause of the fire, with indications from regional president Miguel Albuquerque suggesting it may have been arson.
