Renovation of the João XXI Tunnel in Lisbon

The João XXI Tunnel in Lisbon is set to undergo a major renovation to enhance safety features, including the installation of a new fire safety system. The project, estimated at €7.6 million, awaits approval from the Court of Auditors before construction can commence.

Spanning 1.5 kilometers from Campo Pequeno to Avenida Afonso Costa, this renovation will involve a complete overhaul of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as upgrades to water networks and drainage systems.

In light of a significant fire incident in September 2020, a new emergency exit will be constructed leading to Avenida de Roma to prevent future emergencies. The entire renovation is expected to take around two years, and will involve traffic detours and restrictions.

The Lisbon City Council (CML) has committed to minimizing disruptions to traffic and ensuring the project remains on schedule without incurring additional costs. Work will be carried out in phases to limit traffic impact, with partial or complete road closures anticipated during critical phases of the project.
