March Showers Bring Much-Needed Relief to Algarve
In March, the Algarve experienced over double the average rainfall, while the Alentejo saw three times more precipitation compared to the 30-year average.
The storm named “Jana” brought significant rainfall during the first two weeks of March. According to the Instituto Português de Meteorologia (IPMA), Faro recorded 71.1 mm of rain from March 1 to 11, which is 150% more than the average for this period. In contrast, Portalegre and Beja reported 127 mm and 130 mm respectively, marking a threefold increase.
This surge in rainfall will lead to the relaxation of water consumption cuts in the Algarve, while the Odeleite dam may need to perform water discharges due to the increased levels. This weather change is a welcome relief for the region, which has been battling drought conditions.
