Mortágua's Caution on Majority Votes in Lisbon
The coordinator of the Left Bloc (BE), Mariana Mortágua, issued a stark warning this Saturday, stating that no one has the votes needed for a majority in the Lisbon municipality. She emphasized the importance of uniting forces to defy the angry right-wing factions in the country.
"We know it's possible to defeat Carlos Moedas in Lisbon and teach a lesson to the angry right. We can raise a true city, a Lisbon of freedom, which is how we want it to be. But nothing is guaranteed. No one should think they have the votes for a majority to defeat Carlos Moedas in Lisbon," Mortágua cautioned.
The BE coordinator made these remarks during a lunch event to launch the candidacy of Carolina Serrão for the Lisbon municipality. Currently, the Left Bloc is still exploring the possibility of a pre-electoral coalition with other left-wing parties, such as PS, Livre, and PAN.
Mortágua further urged that no one should be deluded about the work and challenges ahead in this year's local elections, reiterating the necessity of joining forces.
She highlighted the importance of listening and mobilizing various stakeholders, including residents, associations, workers, housing activists, and climate activists. A program must be developed that offers hope to the people of Lisbon, convincing them that nothing will remain the same.
"Local accommodation must be controlled, and homes are meant for living, to be paid for with salaries. The priority is the people living in Lisbon. Anything less than a transformative program of hope will be insufficient for the challenges ahead, which is to return Lisbon to its people," she warned.
