Luís Montenegro, the Prime Minister and PSD leader, has officially endorsed Luís Marques Mendes in his candidacy for the Presidency of Portugal. Montenegro emphasized that Mendes 'fully meets the requirements' for a winning candidate.

In a press conference held in Brussels, Montenegro downplayed recent polls that favor Admiral Gouveia e Melo as the leading candidate for the 2026 presidential elections, stating, 'everything is still open.' He remarked, 'If we were to make political decisions based on polls, we would be at the mercy of the wind.' Montenegro concluded that no candidate is close to securing the majority needed for a first-round victory, keeping the election wide open.

Regarding Mendes, who is set to announce his official candidacy this week, Montenegro believes that succeeding Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Mendes will provide the country with a 'horizon of political stability, strategic cooperation, and service to the Portuguese people.' Montenegro added that there would be 'no surprises' in Mendes' approach.

After 12 years of political commentary on SIC, Mendes bid farewell to his audience, launching his campaign centered on three core objectives: ambition, stability, and ethics. He expressed his commitment to the challenge with 'humility and determination.'
