Major Seizure of Smuggled Cigarettes in Lisbon
More than 24,400 cigarettes were seized in Lisbon during a recent inspection by the GNR (National Republican Guard). This operation revealed that if these contraband cigarettes had entered the market, they would have cost the state over €5,000 in lost taxes.
The GNR announced that this operation resulted in the creation of two reports for illegal consumption of products subject to the Tobacco Tax (IT), culminating in the seizure of the cigarettes hidden in two travel bags.
Details of the Operation
Conducted on Thursday by the Fiscal Action Detachment (DAF), this inspection was part of a broader effort under the Special Consumption Tax Code (CIEC) within the Lisbon municipality. These actions are crucial in combating fraud related to Value Added Tax (VAT) and Special Consumption Tax, targeting the parallel market where taxes are evaded, impacting market operations and economic competitiveness.
