New Access Rules for Benagil Caves

Starting August 13, new access rules for the Benagil caves in Lagoa will be enforced, aiming to manage the overwhelming number of visitors to this popular Algarve attraction.

Key Changes

  • Landing Forbidden: Visitors and companies are prohibited from landing on the beach inside the cave and swimming access is also restricted.
  • Guided Tours Only: Renting kayaks without a guide is no longer allowed, and swimming or using flotation devices in the cave is strictly prohibited.
  • Navigational Limits: The new regulations will define specific conditions for navigating the area between Vale do Lapa beach and Albandeira beach, with the goal of ensuring safety and preserving the environment.

Safety Measures

  • Geographical Separation: Motorized boats will enter from the west, while non-motorized equipment like kayaks will enter from the east.
  • Safety Gear Required: All passengers must wear life jackets throughout the trip and helmets near areas with rockfall hazards.

Visitor Limits

  • Boat Restrictions: Only three motorized vessels under 12 meters are allowed at a time, with a maximum stay of two minutes. Non-motorized groups are limited to six, with guided tours lasting up to eight minutes.

Prohibited Activities

  • No Swimming or Fishing: Swimming or landing on the beach area inside the cave is banned, as well as recreational or underwater fishing.
  • Scientific Exceptions: Only authorized scientific monitoring or research activities are permitted inside the caves.

Compliance and Penalties

Operators must provide visitors with clear information regarding safety and conservation efforts. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines ranging from €200 to €216,000. These rules are designed to protect both the visitors and the fragile marine environment of the Algarve Natural Marine Park.
