Current Situation on Madeira's Wildfire

As of 7:15 PM, the Madeira Civil Protection reports that the wildfire, which ignited on August 14, is under control and currently in the "mop-up phase". Despite being contained, there remains a "hotspot" in the Lombada area of Ponta do Sol.

Firefighting Efforts

More than 70 firefighters are actively engaged in the area, comprising teams from various firefighting bodies in the Madeira Autonomous Region, Azores firefighters, and the Joint Operational Force (FOCON). Their primary task is to prevent any reignition of the fire. A replacement team from the Azores arrived at 2 PM to ensure continuous active surveillance and mop-up operations.

Acknowledgments

The Madeira Civil Protection expresses deep gratitude to all those who contributed to firefighting efforts, including professionals on the ground, institutions, public and private companies, and volunteers who provided support and resources throughout this challenging period. Their joint effort and dedication were crucial in managing and combating the wildfire.

Impact and Damage

The European Forest Fire Information System (Copernicus) has not updated the burned area, which remains at 5,045.8 hectares as reported last Friday. Although the firefighting efforts faced challenges due to strong winds and high temperatures, there have been no injuries or significant damage to houses and essential public infrastructure. However, some small agricultural productions and forest areas were affected.

Ongoing Investigation

The fire started in the mountains of Ribeira Brava and spread to the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Santana. Authorities had advised nearly 200 residents to evacuate for safety, though many have since returned home. The Judiciary Police is currently investigating the fire's causes, with the president of the Madeira government, Miguel Albuquerque, suggesting that it was likely arson.
