The President of the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas, announced that over 100,000 people are expected to gather at Terreiro do Paço for the upcoming New Year's Eve festivities. He urged attendees to utilize public transport and to refrain from bringing glass bottles or any sharp objects.
The event, which features music and fireworks, represents an investment of approximately €500,000. Moedas stated that there are no significant changes in costs compared to previous years.
“This is another great night here in Lisbon, and I want to wish a happy new year to all Lisboetas and Portuguese,” he expressed, while standing near the stage where the New Year’s concert will take place.
Tradition and Entertainment
Lisbon has a unique tradition of hosting such large celebrations that attract both locals and tourists. This year’s event will include performances from renowned artists like José Cid and Mickael Carreira, making it a significant moment for the city.
Moedas emphasized the importance of safety, advising attendees to arrive early and to avoid bringing any prohibited items. He expressed hope that the event will draw many tourists as well as locals.
Regarding security measures, the mayor confirmed that they will be standard and that traffic will be heavily restricted around the area. He encouraged people to leave their cars in parking lots and to use public transport to reach the festivities.
Additionally, he acknowledged the ongoing garbage collection strike, thanking the community and workers for their efforts during this challenging period. Despite the strike, he noted that the situation has been manageable.
From 4 PM onwards, traffic has been restricted in Praça do Comércio due to the New Year’s celebrations, with the police recommending public transport for participants.
With all these preparations, Lisbon is set to welcome the New Year in style, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
