PS Prepares for Electoral Program Update
The Socialist Party (PS) will kick off a series of five sessions next week aimed at a "serious update" of their electoral program from a year ago. However, Pedro Nuno Santos' discourse is primarily focused on the Spinumviva case, which he insists is far from "closed".
During a press conference at the party's headquarters in Lisbon, he dedicated significant time to discussing a news report from Observador, which included documentation related to the case that triggered the government's resignation. Santos criticized what he termed an "organized reaction" following the report, arguing that believing it resolves the issue shows a lack of understanding of the situation.
He highlighted the absurdity of letting those interviewed decide which documents to provide and when, likening it to a "private inquiry commission" conducted not by the PS but rather by a media outlet. He described a recent statement by Minister Pedro Duarte as "pathetic" in light of the Observador's findings.
Santos expressed that while some PSD leaders are trying to wrap up the discussion, they have instead "deepened doubts" on the matter. He remains eager to uncover all clients associated with Spinumviva and noted that the released documentation does not address the gas station scandal linked to a PSD candidate.
Five Sessions for Electoral Revisions
In the upcoming sessions, the PS will tackle various topics affecting the Portuguese populace, starting with housing and health. Following that, discussions will focus on employment and the transformation of the Portuguese economy, which Santos deems the country's "top priority". The agenda also includes debates on foreign policy, environmental issues, and political ethics.
Polls and Voter Indecision
As early post-dissolution polls indicate the AD leading over the PS, Santos emphasizes the importance of addressing the high number of undecided voters. He attributes this indecision to recent news events and expresses hope that the upcoming elections will herald a "new cycle" for Portugal. He asserts the PS must engage in a "clarification effort" with voters over the next two months to mobilize them for political change.
While preparing candidate lists for the upcoming elections, Santos has yet to disclose the criteria for these selections, particularly concerning municipal candidates for the subsequent local elections.
