  • Rocha criticizes Montenegro's lack of timely responses amid the Spinumviva controversy.

  • Allegations of asset concealment prompt Chega to request an audit from the Transparency Entity.

Political Dynamics in Portugal

André Ventura announced that Chega will abstain from voting on the censure motion presented by the PCP. Meanwhile, Rui Rocha, leader of the Iniciativa Liberal (IL), declared that his party will not support the motion, which is expected to be rejected since the PS will not back it. Despite not voting in favor, Rocha emphasized that Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has become very weakened due to the controversy surrounding Spinumviva, a family business he founded and which is now run by his wife and children.

Rocha criticized Montenegro's handling of the situation, stating he has not provided timely clarifications, instead reacting only when necessary. He expressed that Montenegro is nearing the end of the line in his political career, suggesting that he has failed to reassure the public during this crisis.

Despite his criticisms, Rocha confirmed that the IL will not support the censure motion, citing a total divergence from the PCP's reasoning, which he believes lacks the necessary intensity and courage.

On the same day the censure motion was announced, Montenegro hinted at presenting a confidence motion if parties did not affirm the government's capacity to continue governing without hesitation.

Chega's Position

In a press conference, Ventura reiterated that Chega would abstain from voting on the censure motion unless the PCP alters the text. He also indicated that Chega will not obstruct any censure motion but will not support any confidence motion from the government. Ventura criticized the PCP for seemingly aiding the government and urged them to withdraw the motion to allow Montenegro to present a confidence motion to parliament.

Amidst allegations that Montenegro used multiple accounts to avoid declaring assets, Ventura called for an audit by the Transparency Entity to investigate potential violations of transparency rules. He raised concerns about possible concealment of wealth and illicit enrichment related to Montenegro's financial dealings.
