Political Instability in Madeira

The recent censure motion against the Madeira Regional Government has plunged the region back into a state of political instability. Just seven months after the last early elections, Madeira finds itself once again with a caretaker government.

The representative of the Republic in the region, Ireneu Barreto, is set to meet with the seven parliamentary parties tomorrow. It is anticipated that a majority of these political forces will advocate for early elections. The ultimate decision lies with the President of the Republic, who is responsible for dissolving the Legislative Assembly, which remains fully functional until such dissolution occurs.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will need to consult the Council of State and the parties before making an announcement. Should he opt for new elections, this will mark the third time the region has gone to the polls since 2023.

Miguel Albuquerque, who has confirmed his intention to run again, faces internal opposition as calls for elections within the PSD-Madeira party grow louder. This situation has reopened divisions within the party, adding to the complexities of Madeira's political landscape.
