  • There are successive delays affecting all ongoing Metro projects.

  • Metro plans to reopen Cardosas, requiring traffic reroutes for 3-4 weeks.

  • New intervention planned at Rotunda da Boavista, raising public concern over tree preservation.

  • Municipality awaits response from Metro regarding New Year's celebrations in Avenida dos Aliados.

Porto Mayor Calls for Honesty from Metro

Rui Moreira, the President of Porto City Council, has urged the Metro do Porto to be transparent with residents regarding delays in construction projects. He emphasized that the public company has a heightened responsibility to maintain credibility and not mislead the citizens of Porto. "We cannot contribute to the degradation of the Metro's image, but we cannot sit idly by either. We must seek a fair measure, which is to tell them not to lie to the citizens of Porto," stated Moreira during a municipal executive meeting.

Ongoing Construction Issues

Moreira pointed out that there have been successive delays across all construction fronts of the Metro, revealing that the municipality faced a new request from the Metro to reopen the Cardosas, which would require rerouting traffic through Loios. He mentioned that the Metro estimates this additional work will take three to four weeks. When questioned if the work was to implement tram infrastructure, the response was negative, indicating further interventions planned for next year.

Future Plans and Public Concerns

Additionally, the Metro do Porto intends to undertake a new intervention at the Rotunda da Boavista, using the same method that led to the condemnation of several trees. "I believe the public has been continuously misled, and this is something we cannot tolerate," Moreira asserted. He also noted that the municipality had inquired about New Year's festivities on Avenida dos Aliados but received no response from the Metro. He expressed that it would be beneficial for the Metro to communicate whether the celebrations could proceed, as the municipality needs to initiate public tenders soon.
