Financial Boost for Public Transport Operators

Public passenger transport operators in Portugal are set to receive a substantial €6.4 million in financial compensation to offset costs from the sale of social transport tickets subsidized by the State, scheduled for 2024.

According to a recent resolution from the Council of Ministers, the funds will be managed by the General Directorate of Treasury and Finance (DGTF) and the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Accidents with Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF).

Breakdown of the Subsidies

The distribution of these funds includes:

  • €2.2 million will compensate the public sector for the sale of social railway passes:
    • Comboios de Portugal (CP): €665,000
    • Metropolitano de Lisboa: €547,000
    • Porto Metro: Approximately €1 million
  • For maritime and river transport, Transtejo Soflusa will receive €113,000 for the Social+ Pass.
  • Private companies selling social road transport tickets will receive €850,000, while Fertagus, a private railway operator, will be allocated €341,000.
  • Additionally, €2.9 million will be distributed to city halls managing public road transport, including €26,000 for passes for children under 23 years old.
