Extreme Fire Risk in Portugal
Portugal is currently experiencing a very high fire risk across most of its continental territory this Sunday. According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), more than 90 municipalities from the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Braga, Porto, Viseu, Coimbra, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Santarém, and Leiria are under maximum fire danger.
Additionally, the IPMA has elevated the fire risk to very high for around 65 municipalities in Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real, Aveiro, Viseu, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, and Faro. In these areas, the use of agricultural machinery and their respective implements is restricted. Bonfires and burning are also prohibited.
Weather Forecast
The predictions are expected to remain in effect until Wednesday due to wind and heat conditions. The fire risk is determined by the IPMA based on five levels, ranging from low to maximum, calculated from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Today’s weather forecast indicates a partly cloudy to clear sky, with periods of increased cloudiness in the southern region, especially during the afternoon. Winds will be weak to moderate (up to 30 km/h) from the east, shifting to northwest along the western coast in the afternoon, with stronger gusts (up to 40 km/h) in the highlands of the northern and central regions by late afternoon.
A slight increase in temperature is anticipated, especially in the northern and central regions. Maximum temperatures will range from 35°C in Évora to 27°C in Sagres.
