  • Portugal is becoming a hub for medical cannabis production in Europe.

  • The country's climate is ideal for cannabis cultivation.

  • Over 60 companies are authorized to produce medical cannabis.

  • Portugal exported 12 tonnes of cannabis products last year.

  • The global market for medical cannabis is expected to exceed $65 billion by 2030.

Portugal is emerging as Europe's new 'El Dorado' for medical cannabis production, driven by a growing global demand for its therapeutic benefits. Agronomist Jose Martins highlights the country’s ideal climate, often compared to California’s, as a key factor in its burgeoning industry.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Portugal's favorable environmental conditions make it a prime location for cannabis cultivation. The 5.4-hectare farm in Serpa, owned by FAI Therapeutic, produces around 30 tonnes of cannabis flowers annually. With over 60 companies authorized to grow and distribute medical cannabis, Portugal is quickly becoming a hub in this sector.

Exporting Success

In the past year, Portugal exported 12 tonnes of cannabis-based products, primarily to Germany, the largest market in Europe. The global medical cannabis market is projected to grow significantly, reaching over $65 billion by 2030.

Regulatory Framework

Portugal's 2019 legislation has established a robust regulatory framework that ensures high-quality standards, attracting international businesses like Tilray, which operates a farm in Cantanhede. The industry’s growth is further supported by a rising acceptance of cannabis for medicinal purposes, despite existing stigma.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its promising future, patients in Portugal face challenges accessing medical cannabis due to reluctant doctors and costs not fully covered by healthcare. Advocates like Lara Silva emphasize the need for better education within the medical community to improve patient access to these treatments.
