Major Housing Initiative Announced

This Friday, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro unveiled a significant plan aimed at addressing the housing crisis in Portugal. The government will double the number of homes planned under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) from 26,000 to 59,000 by 2030.

Investment Details

To support this initiative, an additional investment of €2.801 billion will be allocated from the State Budget, supplementing the already committed €1.4 billion from the PRR. Montenegro assured reporters that “all projects currently underway without funding will receive financial support from the State Budget.”

Breakdown of Housing Development

According to Miguel Pinto Luz, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, the government will fully finance 36,000 homes, which is 10,000 more than previously planned. The remaining 23,000 homes will receive 60% funding. Currently, 1,600 homes out of the promised 26,000 have been delivered.

Local Government Commitment

Pinto Luz emphasized the importance of municipal commitment to meet the target of building 26,000 homes by June 30, 2026, as outlined in the PRR. He referred to this initiative as the “largest public investment in housing in recent decades.”

Criticism of Stigmas

During his announcement in Alcanena, Montenegro criticized those who attribute negative stereotypes to his government, stating that they are often “conditioned by their own ideological complexes.” He asserted that the housing crisis cannot be resolved without private sector initiative, while stressing that the state must also fulfill its responsibilities.
