Portugal Shines at the World Cheese Awards 2024

The buttery sheep cheese from Queijaria Quinta do Pomar, located in Soalheira, Fundão, has been named the best cheese in the world at the World Cheese Awards 2024, competing against nearly 4,800 cheeses from around the globe.

The competition, organized by the Guild of Fine Food, announced that a soft, spoonable sheep milk cheese, crafted by a Spanish cheesemaker in Portugal, has taken the top honor. This year, a total of 4,786 cheeses from 47 countries were evaluated, and the buttery sheep cheese from Quinta do Pomar achieved the highest score from 240 judges across 40 countries, including cheese technologists, retailers, chefs, and journalists.

The winning cheese is made with raw sheep's milk and vegetarian cardoon rennet. It is traditionally enjoyed by cutting off the top and scooping out its almost liquid paste with a spoon. This year's finals of the World Cheese Awards, held for the 36th time, took place in Viseu, Portugal.

John Farrand, director of the Guild of Fine Food, remarked that Portuguese cheesemakers have made their country proud. He also noted that the world champion cheese is typical of the central region of Portugal, remarkable for being made with cardoon instead of conventional rennet.

The Municipality of Fundão, in Castelo Branco district, publicly congratulated Queijaria Quinta do Pomar for its extraordinary achievement at the World Cheese Awards 2024, stating that this recognition highlights the excellence of local products from the Fundão region.
