Portugal's Cheese Triumph
The buttery sheep cheese from Queijaria Quinta do Pomar, located in Soalheira, Fundão, has been crowned the best cheese in the world at the 'World Cheese Awards 2024', outshining nearly 4,800 cheeses from across the globe.
The Guild of Fine Food announced that this remarkable spoonable cheese, crafted by a Spanish cheesemaker in Portugal, has earned the title after rigorous evaluations by 240 judges from 40 countries.
"Crafted from raw sheep's milk and vegetarian thistle rennet, the award-winning cheese is typically enjoyed by cutting off the top and scooping out its almost liquid interior," noted the organization.
A Historic Event
The final of the 'World Cheese Awards', held for the 36th year, took place for the first time in Portugal, specifically in Viseu. John Farrand, director of the Guild of Fine Food, expressed pride in Portuguese cheesemakers, stating that they have made their country proud.
He added, "The world champion cheese is typical of the central region of Portugal, extraordinary for being made with thistle instead of conventional rennet."
Community Celebration
The Municipality of Fundão, in the district of Castelo Branco, publicly congratulated Queijaria Quinta do Pomar for their extraordinary achievement at the 'World Cheese Awards 2024'. They emphasized that this recognition highlights the excellence of local products from the Fundão region.
