The number of applications for Portuguese nationality has seen a significant increase, with over 1.4 million applications submitted in the past six years. According to the Secretary of State for Justice, Maria José Barros, the rise in requests is a pressing concern for the Ministry of Justice.

Growing Numbers of Applications

In 2022 alone, 300,000 nationality requests were submitted, compared to just 100,000 in 2013. This stark contrast highlights the growing interest in obtaining Portuguese nationality.

Challenges in Processing

During a parliamentary committee meeting focused on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms, and Guarantees, Barros acknowledged the difficulties faced by the new application platform established by the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN). Despite its aim to enhance response times, the platform has struggled with efficiency, leading to high average waiting times.

Currently, responses are being processed for urgent requests submitted in the second half of October 2024, while non-urgent applications from two years ago remain pending. This situation raises concerns about the efficiency of the nationality application process in Portugal.
