Teacher Shortage in Portugal

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated on Thursday that he will not "sell illusions" regarding the teacher shortage crisis currently facing the government. He acknowledged that it is not feasible to resolve the issue overnight but emphasized the importance of mitigating its impact.

"I do not sell illusions. It is not possible to solve this problem overnight. What we are doing is reducing its impact," Montenegro told reporters.

The Prime Minister highlighted that his government, having taken office in April, has not yet had the opportunity to intervene in the teacher placement system. He is aware that many areas lack the necessary teacher coverage.

To address this, the government is focusing on valuing the teaching profession to attract more individuals to the field and to prevent current teachers from leaving for other jobs.

"We are taking steps to mitigate the consequences of the previous process," he noted, mentioning that measures have already been implemented to increase allowances for relocated teachers, particularly regarding housing access.

Additionally, he discussed incentives for teachers, including allowing those who apply for unfilled positions to secure contracts in those schools, providing a more appealing commitment incentive.
