Primoz Roglic views the Volta ao Algarve as a chance to start connecting with his new team, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. The Slovenian cyclist, who is known for being elusive in interviews, offered only a brief comment to journalists at the start of the first stage in Portimão. He has not disclosed his ambitions for the 51st edition of the race, which he previously won in 2017.
Roglic stated, "We have many new people; it’s good to start ‘connecting’ everything. That’s the main goal." With a smile and in good spirits, the four-time Vuelta champion and Giro 2023 winner refrained from elaborating on why he chose the Algarve to kick off a season that will also include the Tour of Italy and the Tour de France.
He remarked, "It’s been a long time since I was here. We have to start somewhere, right?" The 35-year-old emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying, "The most important thing is to try to connect everything. We have many new people, and we need to start working together. Everyone trains together, but racing is different. We all want to give our best."
As he distanced himself from the surrounding journalists, Roglic promised the national audience a "good race," hoping they enjoyed the spectacle. The 51st Volta ao Algarve is underway, with 174 cyclists covering a distance of 192.2 kilometers from Portimão to Lagos, where the finish is expected around 16:48.
