REN Cleans Up 401 Hectares of Forest in Algarve
In a significant effort to safeguard its infrastructure against rural fires, REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais has successfully cleared 401 hectares of forest in the Faro district in 2024. This initiative is part of REN's broader strategy to manage vegetation and enhance fire prevention measures.
National Efforts
On a national scale, REN has managed and cleaned approximately 10,200 hectares of forest, reaching out to over 36,000 property owners to collaborate on these critical projects. With 66% of its electrical lines and gas pipelines located in rural areas, REN has undertaken the management of more than 50,000 hectares in the past five years alone, which is roughly equivalent to a highway stretching from Lisbon to Maputo.
Reforestation Initiatives
In addition to cleaning efforts, REN has also focused on reforestation. In 2024, 461 hectares were (re)forested, involving 1,900 property owners. Since 2010, REN's reforestation program has successfully (re)forested 4,553 hectares, planting over 1.5 million trees. This initiative has engaged more than 24,000 property owners, with the most commonly planted species being strawberry tree and oak, which contribute to increasing biodiversity and enhancing resilience against wildfires.
