A New Era for Lisbon's Metro
The Lisbon Metro is getting a makeover! On Wednesday, October 30th, the new trains were unveiled, promising to enhance the commuting experience for residents of the capital. In total, 72 new carriages (24 triple units) are set to roll out, with an option for an additional 12 triple units (36 carriages). This initiative represents a substantial investment of €134 million.
Among the innovative features in the ML 24 series are designated areas for wheelchair users, clearly marked and equipped with backrests, seatbelts, side supports, an intercom, and an alert button for contacting the conductor.
The new carriages will also include:
- An automatic and continuous train control system
- Upgraded video surveillance systems
- Improved air conditioning in the driver's cabin and passenger areas
- Fire detection systems
- Space for larger luggage
- Digital panels for passenger information
- Enhanced evacuation conditions, sensor technology, and predictive maintenance.
Visual contrast between the doors and the structure has been improved, making it easier for visually impaired passengers to locate doors and determine their open or closed status.
The unveiling was attended by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, who emphasized the government's focus on sustainable mobility in cities and railways, highlighting a strong commitment to the decarbonization of public transport.
The Metro de Lisboa justified this acquisition due to the expected increase in demand for the Metro network in the coming years, thanks to network expansion and improved operational frequencies resulting from the installation of a new Communications-based Train Control (CBTC) system.
The contract for building these models was signed with Stadler Rail Valencia on October 22nd and has already been submitted to the Court of Auditors for prior approval. By the end of 2023, the Lisbon Metro had already launched an international public tender for an additional 72 carriages, with an option for 36 more.
This purchase serves to bolster the existing fleet in light of network expansion and is funded by the Sustainable 2030 Program and the Environmental Fund. It represents an investment of €134 million, co-financed by €45 million from the Sustainable 2030 Program, while the remaining funding will come from the Environmental Fund, with the contract lasting 54 months post-approval.
