5th International Housing Congress in the Lusophone Space
The 5th International Housing Congress (5CHIEL2024) will take place from October 2 to 4 in Lisbon, bringing together architects, urban planners, engineers, and specialists from various Lusophone countries to discuss and share solutions for the challenges of producing and accessing dignified housing.
Power2Build: Leading 3D Construction Innovation in Africa
Since 2020, the Angolan start-up Power2Build has played a vital role in the development of 3D construction technology created by COBOD. They were responsible for constructing the first house using a 3D printer in Africa and are actively working on social housing projects while preparing to enter neighboring Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Investment and Technological Development
The company has invested approximately €8 million not only in acquiring the world's largest 3D printer but also in developing new concrete mixtures, training, research, and expanding their team. They currently operate with two 3D printers and are nearing completion of the first 3D family condominium in Angola, featuring the world's first two-story self-supporting walls.
Market Reception and Future Projects
The market's response has been positive, with plans to expand into Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The 3D construction technology is being integrated according to local regulations, primarily focusing on wall construction with traditional concrete methods. Power2Build is also negotiating social housing projects and aims to establish a European operations center in Portugal to facilitate further expansion.
Collaboration and Future Goals
Power2Build's partnership with COBOD has been crucial for developing and testing new printer versions, significantly improving construction quality while reducing costs. They emphasize the importance of collaboration in addressing the housing deficit using 3D technology, believing that the challenge cannot be tackled by a single company alone. The strategy includes investing in infrastructure and building local partnerships to establish a solid operational base in Europe.
