New Ticket Machines Arrive in Lisbon

The CP (Comboios de Portugal) is upgrading its ticket vending machines across the Lisbon metropolitan area with modern models that accept various payment methods and allow the purchase of all types of tickets, including long-distance options.

These new machines are designed to be accessible for wheelchair users, accept any payment method, and enable passengers to buy tickets for Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains. The transition began in recent weeks, and while the new machines are being rolled out, older models will remain in service at some locations until the complete upgrade is achieved.

However, the new machines are not yet fully operational; they currently do not accept bank card payments (including contactless) as they undergo certification by the Portuguese Treasury (IGCP). During this process, older machines will still be available. It’s noteworthy that 80% of ticket purchases are made using bank cards.

Investment in Modernization

The replacement of CP's ticket machines represents a €10.1 million investment, with 20% financed by European funds. This upgrade not only replaces the outdated machines from 2008 but also doubles the number of ticket vending points. For instance, 22 machines will be installed at Cais do Sodré (up from ten), and 20 at Rossio station. Additionally, some stops will receive ticket machines for the first time, including locations on the Sado Line and Linha do Oeste.

With these new machines, passengers can purchase tickets for regional and long-distance trains up until departure time, similar to physical ticket counters. In contrast, online sales via the CP app and website close about 15 minutes before train departure. A total of 311 new machines are planned, with a third of them (103) accepting only bank cards and placed alongside machines that take cash.

The introduction of automated ticket sales for long-distance and regional trains is a significant development. Historically, in 2003, CP piloted ticket vending machines for regional and long-distance trains in select stations, but that initiative was not continued.
