Scottish Surfer Takes on Nazare's Giant Waves

A Scottish 20-year-old surfer has bravely faced the world’s biggest waves at the Nazare Big Wave Challenge in Portugal. Ben Larg, hailing from Tiree, received a last-minute invitation to compete in this exclusive contest, which was approved for action earlier this week.

In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Larg expressed his mixed feelings of nervousness and delight about his unexpected opportunity. Ben Larg in Action

He has teamed up with British big wave surfing pioneer Andrew Cotton, stating, “It was kind of my dream to team up with Cotty for the challenge. He’s the guy I’ve been surfing with the most and I’m delighted it’s with him.”

As of the latest updates, Larg's team currently holds third place in the contest. Individually, he ranks third on the men’s leaderboard after scoring 14.91 in his first heat and improving to 16.63 in his second.

Additionally, Laura Lou Crane, another British surfer, made her debut in the contest, marking a significant milestone as the first British woman to ride the world-famous waves earlier this year.

The Nazare Phenomenon

Located in the Oeste region, Nazaré is notorious for its colossal waves, a phenomenon caused by the underwater canyon just offshore that amplifies the swell as it approaches the shallower coastline. Notably, Sebastian Steudtner holds the Guinness World Record for riding the largest wave ever at this location, measuring an astonishing 93.72 feet (28.6 m).
