According to a statement from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, the police were alerted to the incident by a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The suspects were reportedly at a café terrace when a verbal altercation ensued. During this confrontation, the witness noticed that the young men were in possession of firearms.

Upon the rapid arrival of the police, they discovered that seven of the eight men had seven firearms of calibers 6.35 and 7.35, along with various ammunition and an automatic knife. The police also indicated that they seized the vehicle of the detainees due to suspicions that more weapons or ammunition could be inside.
