Seven Obstetrics and Gynecology Emergency Units Shut Down Today in Portugal

Emergency Units Closure

Seven obstetrics and gynecology emergency units and one pediatric emergency unit are closed this Monday, as reported by the National Health Service (SNS) website at midnight.

The affected obstetrics and gynecology emergency units include:

  • Hospital de São Bernardo in Setúbal
  • Hospital de Santarém
  • Hospital Garcia de Orta in Almada
  • Hospital São Francisco Xavier in Lisbon
  • Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Barreiro
  • Hospital Dr. Manoel Constâncio in Abrantes

Additionally, the obstetrics emergency unit at Hospital de Portimão and the pediatric emergency unit at Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Barreiro) will also remain closed.

The pediatric emergency unit at Viseu is available from 20:15 to 23:00, while the Hospital Amadora-Sintra operates from 08:00 to 20:00 and has references for nighttime service.

The Hospital Prof. Dr. Fernando Fonseca (Amadora-Sintra) has obstetrics and gynecology emergency services available from 20:00 to midnight, remaining open during the day.

In the referenced units, services are reserved for urgent cases referred by the Center for Urgent Patient Orientation (CODU) of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) or through the SNS 24 line.

The access situation to emergency units has improved this Monday after a weekend marked by significant restrictions, with at least a dozen emergency units closed. In total, eight emergency units are closed today, with three referred (with restrictions), while 161 emergency units remain open.
