Severe Weather Alert

Due to persistent and occasionally heavy rain, the districts of Santarém, Castelo Branco, and Guarda are under an orange warning until 9:00 AM this Monday, as stated by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

Additionally, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, and Aveiro are under a yellow warning starting from 9:00 AM today until midnight on Tuesday due to the same weather conditions.

The districts of Leiria and Lisbon are also under a yellow warning until 9:00 AM, while Portalegre and Setúbal remain under yellow until 12:00 PM, and Évora and Beja until 3:00 PM on Monday.

Looking ahead, the IPMA has issued an orange warning for the coast of nine districts on Wednesday due to expected strong maritime agitation. These districts include Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga, which will be under a yellow warning from midnight until 9:00 AM on Wednesday, transitioning to orange from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM due to anticipated waves from the west reaching 5 to 6 meters.

Moreover, a yellow warning for persistent and sometimes heavy rain is expected on Wednesday for Viseu, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Braga, and Porto. Winds from the southwest may reach gusts of up to 70 km/h, and even 95 km/h in higher altitudes.

The IPMA emphasizes that an orange warning is issued when there is a moderate to high-risk weather situation, while a yellow warning indicates risk for specific weather-dependent activities.

On this Monday, the mainland is expected to experience heavy precipitation and thunderstorms on the North coast, with strong winds in elevated areas and a slight drop in temperature.

Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 11 degrees Celsius (in Viseu and Guarda) and 18 degrees (in Setúbal and Lisbon), with highs between 16 degrees (in Guarda and Viseu) and 24 degrees (in Setúbal and Santarém).
