Severe Weather Hits Portugal
The Civil Protection agency has reported 217 incidents across Portugal due to severe weather, primarily flooding. The hardest-hit regions include Lisbon, Évora, and Setúbal, resulting in six displaced individuals.
Details of Displacements
Late Tuesday night, three people in Montemor-o-Novo and two elderly individuals in Igrejinha, part of the Arraiolos municipality, were forced to leave their homes due to flooding. In Sines, a resident was also displaced due to safety concerns following a landslide.
In Montemor-o-Novo, the intense rainfall not only flooded the home but also caused part of the roof to collapse, rendering it uninhabitable. The three-member family is set to be relocated by the Municipal Civil Protection Service. The elderly couple in Igrejinha has found temporary shelter with relatives.
Damage Reports
In the Mora village, a three-meter-high wall collapsed due to the rain, damaging seven vehicles. The Évora district experienced 16 flooding incidents late Tuesday, mainly in Igrejinha, with the municipalities of Arraiolos, Mora, and Montemor-o-Novo being the most affected.
Nationwide Impact
According to the Civil Protection, from midnight to 8 PM on Tuesday, Portugal recorded 217 incidents, with 133 flood-related occurrences. Additional reports included 39 clean-up operations, 32 fallen trees, eight structural collapses, and five landslides. A total of 848 personnel and 277 land vehicles were deployed to manage these incidents.
Weather Alerts
Seven districts, including Lisbon, Setúbal, and Évora, were under orange alert due to expected heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, as per the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). Castelo Branco and Portalegre are under orange alert until midnight Wednesday, transitioning to yellow until 3 AM. Other regions like Porto, Guarda, and Bragança are under yellow alert until 3 AM Wednesday, indicating potential risks related to weather conditions.
The orange alert signifies moderate to high risk weather, while the yellow alert indicates lesser risk for specific weather-dependent activities.
