Health Minister Accepts Immediate Resignation of SNS CEO
The Minister of Health has accepted the immediate resignation of António Gandra D’Almeida, the CEO of the National Health Service (SNS), who has decided to step down following reports concerning his dual roles.
In a statement, Gandra D’Almeida expressed, "Although I believe I have committed no illegality or irregularity, I have requested to be relieved of my duties to protect the SNS and, importantly, my family’s future and dignity."
The Minister has acknowledged the resignation, stating it was necessary to preserve the SNS, and she will announce a successor in the coming days. In her note, Ana Paula Martins thanked Gandra D’Almeida for his competent work and the efforts of his team during these challenging times, wishing for a swift clarification of the situation that led to his resignation.
Controversial Reports
Recent news from SIC disclosed that Gandra D’Almeida had held the position of director of INEM in the North of Portugal while also working as a part-time doctor in emergency services in Faro and Portimão for over two years. The legality of this dual role has been questioned, as it is deemed incompatible under the law. However, Gandra D’Almeida received special permission from the INEM, assuring that he would not receive a salary for the role.
Despite this, SIC reported that he allegedly earned over €200,000 through a company he established with his wife while serving in these roles. Gandra D’Almeida has stated that the report contains inaccuracies and falsehoods, harming his reputation and hindering his ability to serve the SNS effectively.
Gandra D’Almeida was appointed as the CEO of SNS in May 2024, succeeding Fernando Araújo, who resigned, not wanting to obstruct the government's necessary policies. Gandra D’Almeida, a general surgery specialist, previously directed the Northern delegation of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) since November 2021, alongside leadership roles in the Armed Forces.
