New Video Emerges

A newly released video captures the moments leading up to the tragic shooting of Odair Moniz, who lost his life early on October 21 in Cova da Moura. The footage, recorded by a surveillance camera at 5:30 AM, does not provide clear visuals but shows a PSP police car and Moniz being confronted by police officers, with bystanders observing the situation.

Confrontation Details

In the video, Odair Moniz, aged 43, is seen resisting arrest and attempting to flee as officers try to handcuff him. A physical altercation ensues, during which one officer uses a baton against him. Suddenly, a flash is seen, indicating the first shot fired, which was aimed into the air. The situation escalates with Moniz continuing to resist, leading to further confrontation away from the camera’s view.

Fatal Outcome

It becomes evident that the baton is used again and more shots are fired. The footage captures the moment Moniz collapses, with an officer seen swinging the baton at him. Tragically, he succumbed to injuries after being shot in the armpit and abdomen, passing away at Hospital São Francisco Xavier.

Controversial Circumstances

Initial police reports suggested the presence of a knife, though this detail was absent from the official dispatch regarding the incident. Despite claims, there were no mentions of threats from Moniz or a knife being involved that night. Notably, a 15 cm blade was found shortly after the incident, but it lacked any DNA evidence linking it to Moniz.

Community Reaction

Moniz’s death sparked protests in the Zambujal neighborhood, where he lived and operated a café, with demonstrations spreading to other areas of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Rioters set fire to buses, cars, and trash bins in response to the incident.

Legal Proceedings

In January of this year, the Public Prosecutor's Office charged the police officer involved with homicide.
