Chega Councilor Resigns Amid Serious Allegations
João Rogério Silva, a national councilor of Chega, has resigned from his position and disaffiliated from the party after being accused of threatening a rival, António José Cardoso, with a knife in 2023. He is also alleged to have destroyed the victim's car, resulting in damages estimated at €1,856.
In a statement on Facebook, Silva announced, "I am no longer a member of the CHEGA party, and I have also submitted my resignation from the national council position." He expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating he hopes the truth will prevail regarding the legal issues he faces.
The Threatening Incident
Silva reportedly used a knife to threaten Cardoso, who is no longer a party member and had previously run for a local council position in Oliveira do Hospital. This incident was reported to the National Jurisdiction Council of Chega, which chose not to expel Silva from the party.
He now faces charges of aggravated threats and damage.
Ventura's Controversial Comments
In a statement to JN, Cardoso claimed he did not die during the incident "because it just didn't happen." He alleges that Silva confessed to the crime in court, yet André Ventura, the party leader, referred to it as "a misunderstanding." Cardoso remarked, "He confessed in court and publicly as well. After doing that, he called several witnesses to tell them what he did and even confessed to the GNR."
This incident adds to a series of controversies within André Ventura's party, following previous scandals involving theft, underage prostitution, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
