Storm Laurence to bring heavy rain, hail, and strong winds to Portugal.
Yellow and orange weather warnings issued for various districts including Évora and Faro.

Meteorologist notes unusual frequency of storms this March, attributed to atmospheric pressure systems.
Storm Laurence to Impact Portugal
Portugal mainland and the Madeira archipelago are set to face the effects of a new storm on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. According to meteorologist Pedro Sousa from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this weather instability will be particularly felt in the central and southern regions of the country.
Today is expected to be marked by showers and thunderstorms, especially in the south. The storm is anticipated to enter the southern territories of mainland Portugal this afternoon, leading to strong downpours and hail in these regions.
Weather Warnings Issued
On Tuesday, a slight improvement in weather conditions is expected, but with some minor showers continuing. Starting Wednesday, another storm will approach from the Atlantic, causing further deterioration of weather conditions expected to last for several days.
Due to the adverse weather, the districts of Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, and Portalegre will be under yellow and orange warnings from 12:00 to 18:00 today due to heavy rain and possible thunderstorms, with hail occurring occasionally.
The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for Faro due to strong winds from 12:00 today until midnight on Tuesday. Faro, SetĂşbal, and Beja are under orange warnings, while Lisbon and Leiria are under yellow warnings due to rough seas.
Madeira Island Also Affected
The Madeira archipelago is experiencing strong winds today due to Storm Laurence, with the north coast of the island and Porto Santo under a red warning until 15:00 due to severe sea conditions, expecting waves of 7 to 8.5 meters, potentially reaching heights of 16 meters.
While weather conditions in Madeira are expected to improve on Tuesday, the island will again be affected by the upcoming storm bringing wind and heavy rain on Wednesday.
Unusual Weather Patterns
Meteorologist Pedro Sousa commented that it is not typical to experience such a high frequency of storms during March. He noted that this prolonged sequence of storms leading to unstable weather is not unprecedented, occurring every few years, but it is unusual for this time of year. The persistence of these storms is attributed to the unusual positioning of atmospheric pressure systems, allowing storms to travel further south than usual.
