Important Weather Update

The strong winds warning issued by the Funchal Port Captaincy for Madeira has been extended until tomorrow at 6:00 AM. According to the latest IPMA weather update, the maritime area of Madeira is expected to experience East/Southeast winds, ranging from fresh to very fresh, with periods of strong winds during the morning. These conditions will moderate to fresh by late afternoon, with generally good visibility, occasionally moderate.

Coastal Conditions

  • The Northern coast will see waves from the Northeast measuring 1.5 to 2.5 meters, which is below previous forecasts.
  • The Southern coast is expected to have waves from the Southeast, measuring 1 to 2 meters, similar to earlier warnings.

Safety Recommendations

Given this warning, the Captaincy reiterates the following safety measures for the maritime community and the general public:

  • Reinforce mooring and maintain close watch on docked and anchored vessels.
  • Avoid walks near the sea or in areas exposed to maritime agitation, such as port breakwaters, cliffs, or beaches, to prevent being caught off guard by waves.
  • Refrain from recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and areas frequently affected by wave break, as the sea can easily reach seemingly safe zones under these conditions.
