The Shifting Dynamics of Tourism in the Algarve
Portuguese visitors remain loyal to the Algarve, but the profile of tourists is evolving. According to the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE), there was a 10% drop in the number of Portuguese tourists last year. Expectations for 2024 suggest that the situation will remain similar to 2023.
August, typically the peak month for domestic tourism, has seen a notable decrease in crowds. João Soares, a representative of the Associação dos Hotéis de Portugal (AHP) and director of Hotel D. José in Quarteira, commented, "Indeed, there is less pressure."
Interestingly, despite the perception of fewer tourists due to reduced visits to bars and restaurants, the amount of waste collected by Algar, the waste management company in the region, indicates otherwise. In July and the first week of August, there was a 2.7% increase in waste collection compared to the previous year. This statistic contradicts the general sentiment about decreased tourist activity.
