A tragic incident occurred at the Alcochete Air Force Shooting Range, resulting in one fatality and another civilian in critical condition. This has been confirmed by the Air Force in an official statement. According to reports from Correio da Manhã, the accident was caused by an "explosive device".
The injured individuals were workers from a private company hired by the Air Force for forest management activities at the shooting range. They were engaged in cutting down a stone pine outside the shooting range perimeter when the accident happened. Emergency services were alerted at approximately 1:45 PM, leading to the dispatch of firefighters from Samora Correia, comprising 15 personnel, six vehicles, and a helicopter from INEM.
In the same statement, the Air Force mentioned that it is currently coordinating with relevant authorities to investigate the causes of the accident and has opened an immediate inquiry. Regarding the initial reports of an explosion, Captain Patrícia Fernandes, spokesperson for the Air Force, noted that confirmation of this information is still pending.
