Tragic Incident on the Douro River

A helicopter belonging to the GIPS (Group for Intervention in Protection and Rescue) crashed into the Douro River in Peso da Régua on Friday, August 30, 2024. The alarm was raised at 12:36 PM, and the helicopter was returning from firefighting efforts in Baião, carrying six people on board.

Casualties and Search Operations

Sadly, four GNR soldiers have been confirmed dead, with one soldier still missing. The pilot, who survived with minor injuries, was rescued and taken to the hospital in Vila Real. The helicopter reportedly broke apart upon impact with the water, complicating recovery efforts.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Rescue operations continue, with four bodies recovered so far and searches set to resume at dawn for the missing soldier. Authorities are utilizing local firefighters, maritime police, and specialized diving teams in the recovery efforts. The Douro River presents challenges with visibility and strong currents, making the search difficult.

Statements and Condolences

Pedro Nuno Santos, the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, highlighting the dedication of the soldiers who were performing their duties during the accident. The Minister of Internal Administration, Margarida Blasco, also extended her sympathies and announced a national day of mourning for the fallen heroes.

The President of Portugal and the Prime Minister have both visited the site, underscoring the significant impact of this tragedy on the nation. A memorial will be held to honor those who lost their lives serving their country.

Community Support

The local community has rallied to support the families of the victims, with psychologists on-site to provide assistance. The tragic loss has left a profound impact on the nation, as the search for the final soldier continues.
