### Tragic Incident in Lisbon

A **15-year-old girl** tragically lost her life in a **hit-and-run** accident early Saturday morning on **Avenida 24 de Julho** in the Santos area of Lisbon. The young victim was crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle around **00:10**.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. The driver responsible for the accident fled the scene immediately after the incident, neglecting to provide any assistance.

### Quick Police Response

According to the **Public Security Police (PSP)**, the **Metropolitan Command of Lisbon** swiftly initiated a search, which led to the discovery of the **abandoned vehicle** with damage consistent with the accident. 

### Driver's Surrender

Almost simultaneously, the **suspect** voluntarily presented himself at a PSP station, taking responsibility for the accident. He was identified, formally charged, and subjected to a **Term of Identity and Residence**.

### Huge Participation in Protests Across Major Cities

Today, **thousands of workers** took to the streets in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra, responding to the call from **CGTP** (General Confederation of Portuguese Workers). The secretary-general, **Tiago Oliveira**, highlighted the **enormous participation** and the **determination** of the crowd that marched from Príncipe Real to Cais do Sodré, aiming to **defend public services** and the **social functions of the state**.

Oliveira stated, "This is a clear signal that we must confront issues in workplaces, fighting for a better life, better salaries, and respect for workers' rights, especially as we approach the **electoral campaign** for May 18th." Thrilling Day 3 at the J/70 Corinthian European Championship in Cascais, Portugal

**In a bold move, the PS (Socialist Party) unveiled its election program this Saturday in Lisbon, led by Secretary-General Pedro Nuno Santos.** The proposal includes a **permanent zero VAT on essential food items**, which aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, a measure previously implemented temporarily by the António Costa government due to inflation. This initiative is designed to ensure that **profit margins** for distributors do not undermine the benefits for consumers.  

Another significant proposal is to apply a **reduced VAT rate of 6% on electricity bills for families** with a contracted power of up to 6.9 kVA, expanding the benefit to **5.3 million consumers**, up from the previously covered 3.4 million.

Additionally, the PS aims to **fix the price of bottled gas** based on a proposal from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), which will periodically reassess the price cap.  

In fiscal matters, the party seeks to **reduce the Single Circulation Tax (IUC)** for vehicles with medium cylinder capacity registered after July 1, 2007, by at least **20%**. They also propose a **'zero year' for young taxpayers** entering the job market, allowing them to benefit from tax exemptions without losing their first year of eligibility.  

During the presentation, Pedro Nuno Santos criticized Prime Minister Luís Montenegro for **lacking credibility and integrity**, pointing to failures in health and housing as examples of incompetence. He emphasized the importance of evaluating the seriousness of political leaders as a reflection of government behavior.  

In terms of housing policy, the PS proposes expanding rental support for middle-class families facing high housing costs and aims to **gradually eliminate university tuition fees over the next decade**. The program also includes plans to channel dividends from the Caixa Geral de Depósitos to finance municipal housing construction, focusing on young people and workers.  

The PS envisions a **minimum wage of €1,110 by 2029**, proposing annual increases of at least €60 and a **5% annual rise in average salaries**, aiming to reach at least €2,000 by 2029.  

In health care, the PS plans to integrate **dentistry and mental health into basic care services** of the National Health Service (SNS) and intends to establish support for housing for doctors in underserved health centers. They propose creating **350 dental clinics across the country** to ensure comprehensive public health responses.  

This program reflects the PS's commitment to a **stronger, more resilient National Health Service** and aims to promote universal access to health care.

**Approximately 50 individuals gathered today outside the Madeira Legislative Assembly in Funchal** to show solidarity with a young girl who was assaulted by three 'influencers' in Loures, who were not detained. 

The demonstrators are **demanding justice** for the trio of influencers who filmed themselves assaulting a 16-year-old girl and shared the video on social media. 

**“We demand justice. The aggressors cannot go unpunished,”** stated Ana Moniz, one of the protest organizers. She expressed that it is unacceptable for the three young men to have been released. 

**“We are silencing the victims and freeing the aggressors,”** she lamented to reporters outside the Madeira parliament, where around 50 protesters gathered, holding signs and chanting slogans. 

Ana Moniz explained that the protest was initiated as a **non-partisan movement**, despite the presence of representatives from various political parties, after the group learned about a similar protest scheduled in Lisbon. 

**“We are here in solidarity not only for this young girl but for all women who are victims of sexual violence and machismo,”** she emphasized. 

**“Unfortunately, this is not the first case, and it won’t be the last, but we are here to fight for it to end or for measures to resolve the issue,”** she added. 

The protesters displayed signs with messages such as **“machismo kills, love is not violence,”** “**filming a violation is unacceptable, it should be condemned,”** and “**a good rapist is a jailed rapist.”** 

After reading a manifesto using a megaphone, the crowd chanted **“a woman’s place is wherever she wants,”** “**united women will never be defeated,”** and “**not one more.”** 

Bernardo Margarido, one of the attendees, argued that society needs to **understand that the crime of rape is heinous and must be condemned in every way**. 

**“When we let these situations slip away, we are not only ostracizing a victim but allowing this to happen more often, exposing more victims to such situations,”** the young man stressed. 

Carolina Martins also joined the protest to ensure that acts of violence are no longer trivialized, stating that society is failing and **“something must be done to counter this trend.”** 

**“What shocks me the most is that, out of 32,000 views, no one was able to report it. Moreover, I’ve heard reports from teenage girls saying the victim only reported it because she wanted more. What is this?”** she questioned. 

The three suspects, aged between 17 and 19, were initially detained by the Judiciary Police but were released by the court, subject to periodic reporting and a prohibition on contact with the victim. 

The victim had wanted to meet her TikTok idols, but the encounter ended in a **filmed assault that was shared on social media**. 

Today's protests are also taking place in Lisbon in front of the Assembly of the Republic and in Funchal near the Madeira Legislative Assembly.

On Saturday, **hundreds of Americans** living in Portugal gathered in Lisbon to protest against the **Trump administration**, organized by activists with strong ties to the country. Under the slogan **“Hands Off,”** various placards were displayed urging the U.S. president to respect the Constitution and civil rights. Caryl emphasized their commitment to peaceful protests, stating, "We follow the **Portuguese example**."

**Jaiy Conboy**, 72, added a musical touch to the protest, performing his song "I Will Not Be Silent". He expressed outrage over Trump’s actions, particularly his relationships with adversaries like **Putin** and his disregard for the Constitution. "He's causing chaos! And chaos is his objective. It's all about power," Jaiy lamented.

At the Praça do Comércio, **Jail Kent**, 73, held a sign featuring **Elon Musk**, stating, "My father fought the Nazis in Europe 80 years ago." She reflected on her family's history during **World War II**, asserting that her Republican relatives would not support Trump. "These people are **fascists**. It's horrible; they are taking our rights," she said, highlighting the sentiments of many at the protest.

According to organizers, the protest attracted about **700 participants**, many holding signs adorned with **carnations**, symbolizing the revolution and advocating for freedom of expression. A poignant message read: "What America needs, Portugal knows."

A social-democrat leader remarked, "Pedro Nuno Santos is our **lifeline**. As long as he leads the PS, it’s hard to lose. If this crisis had involved another opposition leader..." highlighting the challenges Santos faces in shaking off his negative image.

According to the Público survey, when asked who is more capable of promoting economic growth, **50%** of respondents chose Montenegro compared to **30%** for Santos. Montenegro also outperforms Santos in addressing issues like **healthcare** and **housing**.

This survey was conducted by CESOP—Catholic University of Portugal from March 17 to 26, 2025, with a maximum margin of error of **2.8%**.
