Tragic Incident in Madeira

A landslide at the Levada da Água de Alto in Faial, Madeira, has resulted in the tragic death of a 21-year-old Spanish tourist and left two others injured.

According to Diário de Notícias da Madeira, the young woman was struck by falling rocks, leading to her immediate death. Ricardo Rosa, the fire chief at the incident site, reported:

"There was a rockfall from the area of the levada used by the levadeiros. Two victims were found on the platform of the levada with minor injuries. A third victim, presumed dead, was located at the bottom of the levada, possibly hit by a rock."

The other two individuals, who did not appear to have serious injuries, were taken to the local health center for further evaluation.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, and the Mayor of Santana confirmed to RTP3 that this tragic event is not related to the wildfires that have been affecting Madeira over the past week.

Emergency services, including the Voluntary Firefighters of Santana and the Municipal Firefighters of Machico, are currently on-site to manage the situation.
