Tragic Incident in Odemira
One of the five firefighters injured in a serious accident on January 1st has tragically died at São José Hospital in Lisbon. The firefighters from the Odemira Fire Brigade were returning from fighting a wildfire when their vehicle crashed on a municipal road connecting Boavista dos Pinheiros and Saboia.
Details of the Accident
According to sources from the Odemira Fire Brigade, the injured firefighter had been hospitalized since the day of the accident. Following the crash, he and another firefighter were airlifted to Santa Maria Hospital and São José Hospital due to severe head injuries and multiple fractures.
The Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (LBP) confirmed the unfortunate news on their Facebook page, stating, "Despite receiving medical care, he succumbed today [Friday] to the severity of his injuries."
Currently, one firefighter remains hospitalized at Santa Maria, while another is at Portimão Hospital. Two of the other injured firefighters have already been discharged.
The Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Odemira also expressed their condolences on Facebook for the loss of Dinis Conceição, aged 38.
The accident occurred around 8:30 PM on Wednesday when the firefighters were returning from a wildfire incident. They were traveling in a heavy firefighting vehicle.
Investigation Ongoing
Traffic was disrupted for several hours following the accident. The five firefighters, aged between 37 and 43, sustained various injuries, with three needing to be extricated from the vehicle. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
