Devastating Statistics from the Holiday Season
Five people lost their lives and 15 others were seriously injured in road accidents across Portugal between Friday and Monday, as reported by the GNR during the release of preliminary data from the "Christmas and New Year 2023/2024" operation.
Comparison with Last Year
This year's figures show a significant increase compared to the same period last year, where only one fatality and seven serious injuries were recorded.
Accident Breakdown
In total, 617 accidents were reported during this timeframe, leading to 201 minor injuries. The deceased were all men aged between 34 and 64 years, with four fatalities resulting from skidding incidents and one from a collision. The skidding incidents occurred in Viseu, Leiria, Lisbon, and Faro, while the collision took place in Setúbal.
Alcohol-Related Offenses
The operation also resulted in the arrest of 157 individuals for driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.2 g/l or higher, with a total of 256 drivers reported for alcohol violations. Furthermore, 83 drivers were arrested for driving without a license.
Traffic Violations
Authorities issued 9,980 traffic violations, the majority being for speeding (1,962), followed by 99 for alcohol offenses and 237 for improper use of seat belts or child restraint systems. Additionally, 119 drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving, 788 lacked mandatory vehicle inspections, and 294 did not have valid civil liability insurance.
Ongoing Efforts
From December 27 to December 30, a total of 43,677 drivers were monitored. The GNR confirmed that the operation will continue to focus on driving under the influence, speeding, mobile phone usage, proper seat belt use, periodic inspections, and valid insurance. Authorities will also pay special attention to the incorrect execution of overtaking maneuvers, changes in direction, and yielding right of way.
