Tragic Incident in Bragança

A 60-year-old man tragically lost his life during a shootout involving the National Republican Guard (GNR) in Calvelhe, a locality in the Izeda parish of Bragança. The incident occurred this afternoon, and the details were confirmed by local firefighters to the Lusa agency.

Injuries to GNR Officers

In the exchange of gunfire, two GNR officers were injured; one suffered a serious leg injury, though he is not in life-threatening condition.

Details of the Incident

According to a statement from the GNR, at approximately 4:20 PM, they received a report at the Izeda Territorial Post indicating that an individual was shooting at workers at a construction site in Calvelhe. Given the dangerous situation, six officers were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the suspect had already left the area. The officers proceeded to his residence to identify him. However, as they announced their presence, they were met with gunfire from an adjacent shed. The officers responded in self-defense. The shootout resulted in the death of the aggressor, while two officers sustained injuries—one serious and the other minor.

Ongoing Investigation

The Judicial Police is currently investigating the incident, and the events have been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office. The GNR has expressed its condolences over the loss of life and is closely monitoring the recovery of its injured officers.
